Event Overview

More than a hike.
A movement.

On May 30th, 2026, we are not just hitting the trails — we are moving mountains for leadership development across Africa. The Trek for Transformation is more than a hike; it is a collective movement to fund Kurumbuka’s mission of equipping, connecting, and empowering local leaders in Rwanda, Uganda, DRC, and Burundi.

Every step you take and every dollar you raise goes directly into Kurumbuka’s Trek program — a 12-week residential leadership experience that invests deeply in young African leaders aged 18–23 who have the passion and vision to transform their communities.

Whether you are scaling a peak or sponsoring a hiker, you are a vital link in a chain of transformation. Together, we ensure no leader walks alone.

A hike and a classroom

As we walk the Diez Vistas trail together, the hike itself becomes a learning experience. At 5 stations along the route, we pause to explore the leadership principles that guide Kurumbuka’s work in Africa — principles practised every day by the young leaders your fundraising supports. Scroll through the stations below to preview what we will encounter on the trail.

Self-Leadership
Know yourself to lead others
Effective leadership begins within. Trek leaders start by understanding who they are — their strengths, blind spots, values, and calling — before they ever attempt to lead others. Through Kurumbuka’s Self-Leadership curriculum, young leaders learn to steward their time, energy, and gifts with intention. The most powerful thing a leader can do is become deeply self-aware, because you cannot give what you do not have.

Abundant Leadership
Lead from abundance, not scarcity
At the heart of Kurumbuka’s model is the belief that Africa’s leaders are not lacking — they are waiting to be unleashed. Rooted in John 10:10, Abundant Leadership challenges the scarcity mindset that holds communities back and replaces it with a posture of possibility. Trek leaders learn to see the resources, gifts, and potential already present in their context, and to cast vision from that place of abundance rather than from fear or need.

Servant Leadership
Lead like Jesus
The world’s most transformative leaders are not the ones who climb highest — they are the ones who stoop lowest. Kurumbuka’s Lead Like Jesus curriculum shapes Trek leaders around the radical model of Christ-centred servant leadership: authority expressed through humility, influence built through sacrifice, and legacy measured by how many others you have lifted. In a continent hungry for integrity in leadership, this principle changes everything.

ABCD
Asset-Based Community Development
Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) is one of Kurumbuka’s most practical and transformative frameworks. Rather than beginning with a community’s problems or needs, ABCD trains leaders to first map what already exists: the skills of individuals, the networks of relationships, the cultural wisdom, and the local institutions. When leaders lead from assets, communities move from dependence to ownership — from being recipients of outside solutions to architects of their own transformation.

Multiplying Impact
One leader can change hundreds of lives
The final station captures the entire purpose of the Trek fundraiser. When you invest in one Kurumbuka leader, you are not investing in one person — you are investing in every person that leader will ever teach, mentor, serve, or inspire. Trek graduates go back to their communities in Rwanda, Uganda, DRC, and Burundi carrying everything they have received, and they begin to give it away. That multiplication is the engine behind Kurumbuka’s goal to develop 10,000 African leaders by 2030.
